REVIEW: Within Temptation - Mother Earth DSFA Records, 2000
Within Temptation - Mother Earth - cover art Just listen to the exquisitely beautiful opening track on this album and you will immediately come to understand the immense power and beauty of "Mother Earth" and the dutch band Within Temptation. Until this album they have had a bit of a problem finding the right music for the serene vocals by Sharon Den Adel. Now the music fits almost perfectly with her vocals on most of the tracks except for a few slower ones where it tends to get a little boring. In fact the music is not that special if you remove the amazing keyboard arrangements conceived by René Merkelbach. If you combine the best moments of Trail Of Tears and Nightwish you know what to expect from these. It is still fully sufficient for the kind of metal Within Temptation aims at. Their style is a little similar to The Gathering and Lacuna Coil but it's luckily twice as strong, both musically and vocally. Their debut album sold more than 60 000 copies and I can't imagine this one doing any worse than that. "Mother Earth" reveals new dimensions in the concept of metal and it is easily one of the best releases of the year. Just be prepared to listen to a few slower non-metal songs where Sharon's voice does most of the work in case you decide on buying the album, an act of good taste which I highly recommend.
