REVIEW: Within Y - Portraying Dead Dreams Gain Records, 2006
9/10
Within Y - Portraying Dead Dreams - cover art Fine Melodic Death Metal from Gothenburg, where else could it be from? Within Y present their second full-length album “Portraying Dead Dreams” on their new label GAIN. The short title song preludes the album with style, setting the scene for another 10 marvellous songs. It’s been a while since I discovered a Melo-Death Metal band that blew me away, but Within Y have managed that. Fine guitar work, drums that always sounds right, with a few blastbeats every now and then. With the vocals not too much in the foreground, the emphasis is set on the melodies. “Breeding Murder” is a good example of that, but even more so is the third song “Never Forgotten”, which is a blast from start to end. Possibly the best song on the album. The guitar melodies blend in perfect with the blast beats and the vocal abilities of Andreas Solveström. Another song definitely worth mentioning is “Unjust”, which starts with a great guitar/drum intro blending in to a mid-tempo verse. As aforementioned, it’s been a while since I got a great melo-death album, and this one is probably the best one I’ve heard since Dark Tranquility’s "Character" release last year. A mixture of great melodies, a nice blend of all instruments and vocals that do not overpower the instruments all add up to Within Y’s “Portraying Dead Dreams” being a good release, and I’m sure this is not the last we are to hear from them.
