REVIEW: Wolf - Black Wings No Fashion Records, 2002
8.5/10
Wolf - Black Wings - cover art Wolf is regarded by many as the new Swedish promise when it comes to heavy metal and when listening to their second full-length album there is no doubt that this is the truth. Their first album was chosen as one of the "dynamites" of 2000 by the German metal magazine Rock Hard and Frank Albrecht of the same magazine gave this new release a 10 out of 10 rating. You probably realize by now that Wolf is a band who have come to stay. "Black Wings" opens up with a killer speed riff and then we are taken through another 40 minutes of mach-speed heavy metal with some of the most impressive song-writing I've seen from a Swedish heavy metal band in a long time. The only thing I don't like about this album is the high-pitched whining vocals that I find pretty annoying in the end. The album was recorded at the Abyss Studio together with the workaholic Peter Tägtgren and the cover art was done by none other than Thomas Holm (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond). The album also includes a nice Wolf cover version of the Mercyful Fate classic "A Dangerous Meeting". Except for the vocals this album totally rocks. I am not that fond of the extremely foolish "jeans / sweat / working class / factory floor" marketing of the band either; they deserve a lot better than that from the label... There is absolutely nothing wrong with working in a factory but marketing a band like that is completely crazy.
