REVIEW: Wolfen Society - Conquer Divine No Fashion Records, 2002
7.5/10
Wolfen Society - Conquer Divine - cover art Wolfen Society is as you perhaps already know some kind of black metal all-star project, featuring Vincent Crowley (Acheron), Kyle Severn (Incantation), Lord Ahriman (Dark Funeral), Thomas Thorn and Ricktor Ravensbruck (both of The Electric Hellfire Club). The band was originally formed in 2000 by Crowley as Acheron had temporarily split up and since he had written material for a full-length album he decided to rework this for the new band. Awaiting the full-length album No Fashion Records now release this mini album which consists of one new song, two tracks from the upcoming album and a cover version of Carnivore's "Race War". The music of Wolfen Society is misanthropic and satanic black metal as you might expect from the people involved. The music is still far from what bands like Darkthrone and Carpathian Forest deal with and it actually sounds a little like Susperia's debut album from last year although it is a little doomier. There are however plenty of tempo changes but the overall feeling I get from the album is that it is heavier and doomier than most black metal releases while still maintaining an evil atmosphere that colors this album black all the way through. A few samples of wolves howling and spoken sentences add further to the atmosphere and I think Wolfen Society have made a very nice first effort.
