REVIEW: Wolfthorn - Cold Inside Behemoth Productions, 2004
6/10
Wolfthorn - Cold Inside - cover art “Cold inside” is the first effort put on CD by the German one-man band Wolfthorn, after a MCD called “Spiritual Supremacy”. This is pure black metal which could be labelled as unrelenting and restless without any kind of doubt, for it´s intense and powerful throughout all the recording. Forget about cheesy keyboards or melodic extravaganzas, here there´s no peace for the listener, no female voices, no synths. Darkthrone is the main reference here, since the vocal registers to the guitar lines, quite focused in long repetitive notes sequences in the vein of Nocturno and Fenriz classic songs. Hmmm... maybe some German evil purveyors Nagelfar influences could be also heard here. Most of the album is fast, but drums are programmed (despite sounding better than thousands of sound-like-a-can drum machines heard in many albums of the scene), so the result is a bit colder than expected in my opinion. Well, the sound in general is a bit clinical but I´ve heard worst productions, that´s for sure. This album is easily audible.

All in all Wolfthorn´s “Cold Inside” is not going to break any barrier in the metal scene, since it´s very typical black metal in the Norse cold tradition. The good thing is the intensity and the hateful sentiment present in every second of the album. Anyway, we´re not before a masterpiece, certainly. The mastermind behind the project, namely Thurlokh, does what he wants and I suppose that´s the point for him, spreading grimness and negativity shaped under the black metal file. He succeeded in that aspect, though “Cold inside” isn´t anything special. The title song is maybe the best of the album, reflecting perfectly what Wolfthorn is about: pure, uncompromising, hateful, fast black metal. Nice cover art consisting of paintings made by excellent artist Zdzislaw Beksinski, by the way. As a last thing to add, the last three songs are unreleased tunes taken from rehearsal tapes, and their quality is clearly below the album songs.
