Despite the fact that Woods Of Belial is from my neighbouring country Finland this is the first time I come in contact with them. It may not be that strange though as there are plenty of bands in the Nordic countries and even though this one has been around since 1995 it is only now that they have found a label willing to release their debut album. Early influences for Woods Of Belial were the early grim black metal of Norway but it soon became evident that they had to become more depressive and suicidal in order to reach their goals. Today it would be wrong to refer to them as a black metal band as they have delved much deeper into the desolate doom metal fields to reach a state of depression worthy of such an entity that Woods Of Belial represent. Their music is slow, heavy and repetitive with rich haunting soundscapes, leaving the listener lying on a meadow of thorns where suicide seems to be the only salvation. They have also found a way to use harsh industrial influences which I have not encountered before. Many black metal bands have incorporated cold industrial elements to make their music sound more massive and intense but I have not really heard a doom metal band use it like this. If futuristic doom metal with a black industrial twist sounds like an interesting concept then check out this upcoming Finnish band.
