"The Wurdulak" is a short horror story by
the famous Italian director Mario Bava where Boris Karloff plays a vampire
slaying grandfather. Wurdulak is also the name of the band where members of
the American and Norwegian extreme metal scenes work together. Among the seven
members we can find several former and current Necrophagia members, including
Killjoy, but also Maniac from Mayhem and Iscariah from Immortal. The band has
been around for a couple of years now and released their debut album
"Ceremony In Flames" through Baphomet Records last year. Their new album is
yet another big tribute to horror movies, violence and gore and the three
guitar assault makes them sound both powerful and scary. The music of Wurdulak
is a very enticing mixture of black and death metal where influences from
Immortal and Darkthrone are mixed with the violent gore of Necrophagia and the
creepy atmosphere of early Celtic Frost. Many of the songs evolve around
groovy guitar riffs that reminds me very much of newer Immortal but they have
taken it one step further where they are almost leaving the extreme metal
scene musically speaking. The vocals are top-notch growls and screeches done
in every possibly way by both Maniac and Killjoy who are two very prominent
vocalists. It loses a little momentum towards the end but it's still a solid
album that should please most fans of extreme metal. Stand-out tracks:
"Rescued By Oblivion", "Unified Global
Misanthropy".
