If you can't stand programmed drums then stop reading at once. In my opinion drum machines are often used wrong by bands but when it is programmed with as much care and skill as it is on the second Wynjara album I can't complain. Yes, after four years Jason Morgan (ex-Monstrosity, Burner) and John Paul Soars (ex-Malevolent Creation, Divine Empire, Burner, Paingod) are back again with the follow-up to their self-titled debut album from 2000. They may have relocated to Australia but musically they are still firmly rooted in American soil. In fact, Wynjara is an Aboriginal language and an original choice of a band name which is hard to find these days. This is not too remote from the music of their previous bands Monstrosity and Malevolent Creation. While not losing touch with the brutal side of death metal, they add diversity to their sound with nice melodies, memorable riffs and well placed vocals from frontman Brooks Rose.
Killer songs such as "Laughing As They Die" and "Disgrace" show clearly the song writing skills of the duo Morgan / Soars who are the driving forces behind Wynjara. "Human Plague" is not all about simple death metal. Most of the songs have a very nice groovy touch, there are a couple of good instrumentals and the sludgy Slayer-ish sounding "I Am" again shows the diversity of Wynjara who have many different sides up for display on this sophomore album. Jason Morgan spent many hours trying to find the perfect production for their new music and he succeeded in making it sound both powerful, aggressive and sharp. If you are a fan of mid-90s American death metal you will enjoy this album. It's not the highlight of the genre but good, solid material. "Human Plague" feels personal and few albums do today.
