This is third release of this Finnish band on
Solistitium Records, cave of modern pagan Black metal. Wyrd is
one-man-does-everything band. Narqath did it from lyrics to composing and
playing to recording entire opus. Vargtimmen mostly succeeds in creating solid
taste through it’s almost 50 minutes of material. Simple Black Metal riffing,
with some lead guitar parts, mid tempo, ridding, drums, backset, almost
hidden, keyboards and classic BM voice is overall. Resulting mood is let’s say
yearning, melancholy which goes fine with lyrics that write about majestic
Nordic nature and it’s well kept secrets. Lyrics are interesting as it’s
obvious that Narqath is in love with his natural surrounding and he is able to
find the essence of that attraction as well as to carry over that emotion to a
nearby listener. Although aforementioned simple Black metal style is overall
still there are many other elements put in this album that make it more rich
and complex/personal. Often the atmosphere is enriched with acoustic parts
that calm down the pace and, with it’s simplicity, bring you closer to content
of lyrics. Yet, many other ornaments, voice changes firstly, are harming the
prevailing rhythm and violently change it in moment, in order to disappear
quickly. This incoherence of songs dynamics would be my main objection for
this material. You just get in the mood (and start preparing for some death)
when it wakes you, either by strong clean voice, or by storming drums, or
something else, but it definitely blurs your vision and places you somewhere
else. Perhaps with more listening this can be fixed, but so far I haven’t
succeeded. Also, choice of rhythms offered here is surely not impressing. I
think one hand is enough for numbering them all.
