REVIEW: Wyvern - No Defiance Of Fate No Fashion Records, 2001
7/10
Wyvern - No Defiance Of Fate - cover art The Swedish metal band Wyvern released their debut album "The Wildfire" in January 1999 but they weren't really satisfied with the result. Now they are back with nine brand new tracks and a better production due to the use of the facilities at Studio Fredman. They have also acquired two new members - drummer Peter Nagy (Eternal Oath, Mörk Gryning, Hypocrite) and vocalist Toni Kocmut (Sins Of Omission). The musical landscape through which this album leads us is a mixture of old-time classic heavy metal and the new equally loved/hated power metal sound. I don't have anything against power metal because there are some bands who do it really great but very often these bands rely heavily on peering vocals which often sound good at a first glance but in the end only annoying. This is partly the case with Wyvern but I still have to credit them for making some very nice songs like their tribute to metal called "The Liquid And The Metal" and the dynamic "Morningstar". Wyvern is a little harsher than most power metal bands and I guess this relates to the fact that a few of the members have connections to death and black metal bands. This makes their new album more interesting and worth checking out.
