REVIEW: X-Hells - Subterranean Stories Lucifer Rising Records, 2002
6.5/10
X-Hells - Subterranean Stories - cover art X-Hells is yet another metal band from Italy, a country that has been growing to become one of the leading metal nations of Europe in the late 90's. Bands like Opera IX, Rhapsody and Lacuna Coil have put Italy on the international metal map once and for all. This album was also produced by Steve Sylvester from the Italian cult band Death SS. X-Hells doesn't have much in common with any of the bands mentioned above. Instead they sound more like modern American bands like Slipknot and Static-X mixed with some death metal riffing and close to hardcore sounding vocals. I read in a review that the vocalist was compared to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth but that is only true if you remove the weird distortion that makes every single word he screams out cut through your ears like a razor sharp knife. While not sounding like any other nu-metal band of today they still have little new to offer the world. They could become much more interesting though if they continue to develop their more experimental side as shown on the groovy "Kill The Different", without a doubt the best song of the album. The sheer intensity of the energetic crusher "Contradiction" is also great to hear. X-Hells have produced a nice album that should appeal to fans of Slipknot and Machine Head but they still have some work to do before reaching the top.
