Xzoriath is a band that I have been curious of for some time now. They are a band from my area of Sweden who have been functioning as a band since about 1999 but every time they have played live I have not been able to go and see them. Therefore I had no idea what to expect when I sat down to listen to this second demo from the band. The band's image borrows very much from the now so popular horror / vampire image which together with the operatic vocals from the female member Eva Heinaste obviously entitles them to use the term gothic to describe their music. I don't really agree with that as most of the material on this demo is basically a hybrid form of mid-paced black and death metal with rather simple patterns, sometimes quite groovy. As their music is hard to define in just one word they have decided to simply call it apocalyptic metal, meaning absolute nothing but at least it's a name. It does however give the band somewhat of a religious shadow over them. They aim to make intense feelings such as aggression, power, agony, grief and sadness come to life in their music. To some extent they have actually succeeded in doing this. The haunting atmosphere with pounding drums, Gregorian vocals and Eva's operatic voice in "Intermezzo 2" shows the best side of the band. Xzoriath have two choices if they want to make a lasting impression on me - they either have to improve their song writing skills as a metal band or completely let go of the metal and become a pure darkwave / ambient band. Either way they still have some work to do. Eva does have a very nice voice, it's just a matter of learning how to make all different elements come together as one.
