REVIEW: Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force - Marching Out Polygram Records, 1985
9/10
Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force - Marching Out - cover art Yngwie Malmsteen is a man who you probably either love or hate depending on your musical standpoint but whatever your opinion is he is one of the most skilled guitarists ever to walk upon the Earth. Following up on his debut solo album "Rising Force" he released this one. Yngwie has been critisized by many not to create songs but rather a chaos of show-off guitar solos that, no matter how well executed, ruin the flow of the music itself. At this stage though you can't really complain about the song writing which reached its heights in killer classics like "I'll See The Light Tonight" and "I Am A Viking", two of the most prominent creations in the entire Yngwie catalogue which is quite large indeed today anno 2004. Not only are the song writing skills apparent here but we also have an impressive line-up featuring Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, Marcel Jacob on bass and the Silver Mountain brothers Anders and Jens Johansson on drums and keyboards respectively. Everything just seems to fall right in place on this album and whether you are an Yngwie fanatic or a skeptic you should definitely check this one and make your own opinions if you haven't already done so. A few weaker songs but altogether this is a prime example of how well 80s hard rock and exquisite neo-classical metal riffs can work together when some of the world's most talented musicians the genre has to offer get together. Reviewing albums from such a well-known artist may seem redundant but there are many younger metal fans out there today who do not know much about the classics from the 70s and 80s yet. This is for you.
