The French metallers
Your Shapeless Beauty were one of the first additions to the Adipocere family
and they are still with their native label for the release of their new album
"My Swan Song". When "Swan" and "Song" are mentioned together I always
come to think of Carcass but although there are plenty of growling vocals on
this album the music does not have much in common with the British death
grinder legends. Instead Your Shapeless Beauty should appeal more to fans of
early Anathema and Paradise Lost who don't mind some black metal tendencies
added to the early death / doom sound of these British pioneers. When you
think about it it is amazing that so many important and groundbreaking bands
have risen from the British isles. It is sad to see that there are no longer
any such activity over there. Who can forget about Cathedral, My Dying Bride,
Anathema, Black Sabbath, Saxon, Sabbat, Paradise Lost and Cradle Of Filth?
What is there today except for these old bands? Anyway, back to this album.
Once again I listen to an album where I find it hard to tell whether I enjoy
the music or not. Your Shapeless Beauty have been around since late 1994 and
show a tight and mature sound but that is not all you need to make people
remember you by. Even though there are both female vocals and violin to be
found here, which I generally like very much in metal, I have not fallen in
love with this album. The male black vocals sound a little thin and there are
no songs that you would want to listen to again. It works well as background
music but that is all there is. Not bad but
forgettable.
