Yyrkoon pretty much play rhythmic death metal, at a groovy, mid-paced speed. I’m not sure how they would describe themselves, but that’s pretty much the best way I can think of summarising their sound. Flavours of Vader permeate occasionally, while at other times it is pretty typical double bass-drum driven, chugging metal. It is difficult to pick out anything wrong with this album, but the question has to be asked, as it so often does: what is different here? What is there about this sound which would make me want to check them out further? With this album Yyrkoon offer a solid collection of beefy songs, with plenty of good-paced beats and some vocals which are above average, but their overall sound rarely strays from the well-trodden path. Occasionally there are different ideas thrown in which add a lot to the sound – the final track Signs for example mixes a bit of old school riffing (reminiscent of something by Dismember) with a few clean vocals which work surprisingly well. If the band can build on aspects like this to add some identity to their sound, then this album might be a sign of good things to come; they are obviously musically able, but it seems a lot of this is channelled in quite a mediocre direction, with the songs too often slipping into chugging, bass drum heavy sections which quickly leave the memory. Some nice lead guitar work remedies this to an extent, but it has to be said that there is little on display that makes this band stand out.
