REVIEW: Zaburon - Sic Bellum Incipit Self-financed, 2003
7/10
Zaburon - Sic Bellum Incipit - cover art As far as I understand, this Italian band has made only one demo before their debut album. It comes clear that no more is needed for these guys to find their direction. “Sic Bellum Incipit” is filled with technical death metal yet maintaining a distinctive sound to stand out from the other alikes. At times you get on the firing line of Zaburon’s fast riff assault and before you realize, they switch on the prog gear. Here and there you can also hear some groovier parts made for mosh to. The production is not the best possible, but you can hear pretty much everything, even the cool bass lines. Unfortunately, while tearing everything possible out of their instruments, the playing seems to fumble a bit, but does not really disturb. Also, the vocals could have been articulated better as now it is almost impossible to hear what the vocalist is saying. Reading the lyrics reveals you that English is not this group’s mother tongue. Not reading the lyrics keeps this point pretty much out of sight, so it is not a big issue as the music itself is fascinating. In spite of all the weak links, this is a well composed and complete album for a debut as I am craving to hear Zaburon’s next release.
