REVIEW: Zarathustra - Contempt Undercover Records, 2005
8/10
Zarathustra - Contempt - cover art After ten years of devilry Zarathustra offers us this MCD/MLP named to honor the work of Friedrich Nietzsche - ‘Contempt’. The material kicks off in a very serious and mature way, showcasing us already in the first tones what we can expect further. It’s pure traditional Black Metal, leaning to Darkthrone from it’s more recent phase and albums like ‘Ravishing Grimness’, but also having influences from the Thrash and Death Metal genres, and at last, but not least, own ideas and touches. The four songs present on the CD version of album differs somewhat from one another. While the first is very fast and very brutal the 2nd is thrashier and the next one is slower, while the fourth song is somewhat epic, with catchy lead guitar melodies. Still, all theses different things are composed in an elegant style into a compact release, although I wish there were more songs like the first one. This combination of different styles must be the most obvious place for maturity and experience this band has, since it’s not so easy, but they pulled it off with no visible problems. Also, needless to say, all instruments and riffs sound, technically speaking, perfect. Apart from the technical side, all melodies are attractive and enjoyable, the song structures are also very good, no boring parts. This release comes both as MCD and MLP with the vinyl advantage of having one more track, a cover from ancient German metallers Poison. Both versions are numbered and Undercover promises there will be no re-pressings.
