REVIEW: Zero Cipher - 45 Minutes Of Fairytale Endings Casket Music, 2003
6/10
Zero Cipher - 45 Minutes Of Fairytale Endings - cover art Zero Cipher was formed by four young men in Surrey, Great Britain, in 1998. Influenced by various bands and artists like Nick Cave, Glassjaw, Tool, Raging Speedhorn, Haste and Earthtone9 they started working hard on getting their band name known to the world. Results were soon to be seen and now they have signed a deal with their native label Casket Music (a division of Copro Records). With Rob Zombie-like samples, extreme hardcore vocals coupled with clean choruses and a heavy metallic metalcore / neometal edge. They have already been hailed as one of the most promising hard and heavy British bands at the moment by the media in their home country and have even been referred to as "pure genius" by Rancid-News.co.uk. This is a big exaggeration in my opinion but I have to agree with them that the music of Zero Cipher does show some interesting features. While being both aggressive and a headbanger's delight they are also able to incorporate atmospheric elements into their sound as well as weird and twisted electronics here and there. I wouldn't say that it's a masterpiece or even an album that I would buy in a store but if you like metal / hardcore hybrid bands in general then Zero Cipher should have something to offer. Old fans of the band will also be happy to see that they have included a second cd with their self-released mini album "45rpm" for free. Guest appearances from Paul Catten (ex-Medulla Nocte, Murder One) and Choff (Snub). Stand-out tracks: "Filth" (from the mini album...).
