REVIEW: Zyklon - Disintegrate Candlelight Records, 2006
8.5/10
Zyklon - Disintegrate - cover art Zyklon is undoubtedly most famous for 50% of the band hailing from the mighty Emperor. However, no trace of that type of infernal majesty is found in Zyklon. No, Death Metal is the order of the day and this quartet kills everything in its path. Throw Deicide, Sinister, and Morbid Angel -- only the early to mid-90s versions thereof, naturally -- in a blender along with blood and gasoline and you get an idea as to the type of pyrotechnics on display. Disintegrate exudes musical muscle and excellence regardless of the band's pedigree, though without fantastic musicians the music would necessarily suffer, would it not? That said, no amount of studio magic can cover a lack of talent. No, make-up and additional musicians are needed for that -- just ask Gene $immons. Back to the front, Fredrik Nordstrom's mix is punishing like myriad razors through your eyelids and ear drums but the blistering riffs and pummeling percussion dominate. There's nothing mainstream here -- well, maybe except for that breakdown in "Ways of the World," which still kicks ass -- just killer Norwegian Death Metal. After all, who says Norway only has Black Metal? Zyklon shows the world that there's more than just corpsepaint in them there parts.... Bonus: album closer is a mid-paced chugger which invokes Bolt Thrower as much as it does Napalm Death. Bludgeoning never sounded so brutal.
