REVIEW: Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn Metal Blade Records, 2004
9/10
Cannibal Corpse - The Wretched Spawn - cover art Although nearly every metal head is aware that Corpse's last few albums have been less than exceptional, I still couldn't help but get excited at the prospect of reviewing their latest album. This is probably because they're not infamous without reason, and because they've released so much incredible material in the past that I trust that they can do so once again. Well the verdict is in, and this album is sick. I was headbanging from start to finish, and then again... and again. The onslaught of gore and blastbeats simply does not subside. In fact, one of my favorite songs off the album is the blazing conclusion ("They Deserve To Die") to this very technically sounding effort. I am beyond excited that Cannibal Corpse has managed to release another album of this quality. Fisher's vocals are sounding as ever, including an extremely long and extremely brutal scream at the breakdown of "They Deserve to Die." The album is as fast as would be expected of the band, slower only to "Devoured By Vermin" perhaps.

The technical and rhythmic talent displayed in this album, is more than enough to impress and convince me that they're back on the right track. "Gore Obsessed" had its moments, but it was still far from "Tomb Of The Mutilated" quality, and now with "The Wretched Spawn" released, it would seem that they truly have returned to their greatness. I saw the concert supporting this album about a week ago, and it was as brutal as you would expect. They played much, much faster and harder than when I saw them at New England Metal and Hardcore fest two years ago, and while the set list did consist of a lot of the same old material, that is the material we (I would say "I" but I'm pretty sure I'm speaking for more people than myself) love the most! "Hammer Smashed Face," "Devoured By Vermin," "Vomit the Soul" and "The Cryptic Stench" to name just a few. But they did hit a good few songs off "The Wretched Spawn" and they kicked ass in a live environment. They fit in perfectly with the old favorites, and I couldn't be happier to say so. This album is both solid and fresh, and completely revitalized my love for Cannibal Corpse. Highly recommended.
