Canopys "During day one" is a good solid addition, and even an acknowledgment and allegiance, to the older Swedish melodic Death Metal. And very well done for their first offering.
You'll find some slight similarities to the styles of such bands as (older)Soilwork and (older)In Flames. But they're definitely more comparable to Dismember, Edge of sanity and the like (the last track "Shades of truth" especially carries out that "old school" style.) With this four track demo each individual members part in Canopy is utilized and feeds off the other, tieing everything together nicely. Sticking with a swedish death metal base their style is rounded out with a doomish overtone and catchy thrash moments. The lead and rythm throughout the demo are elegant but in your face, while the solos have substance and are essential to Canopys overall sound. The drums have their shining moments, and provide constant balance and backbone for basslines that vibe harmoniously with low pitched vocals subtley thundering through each song. All of this making Canopys brand of doom ridden melodic death metal all the more compelling. As an added bonus, one of the most well known individuals in the history of modern Swedish metal, Dan "has a hand in everything" Swanö, lent a hand to these young driven swedes in the form of a lead guitar and clear tone vocal contribution for the outro to track three "Symbiotic." I suggest if you hail from Sweden and have a chance to see these guys live, don't miss it. Get yourself a copy of "During day one" and watch for their next release expected in early 2005.
