REVIEW: Canvas Solaris - Penumbra Diffuse Sensory Records, 2006
8.5/10
Canvas Solaris - Penumbra Diffuse - cover art If "Georgia based intrumental tech-metal trio" makes you cringe, stop reading right now. Better yet, finish this review and then stretch your wings a bit to consume something that you might otherwise refuse or not choose. Canvas Solaris play a brand of progressive instrumental Metal that fits in somewhere between Cynic and Gordian Knot, sounding exactly like neither while reminding one an awful lot of both. Some might argue that this is a hindrance, but the love of all things King Crimson shines through and an overall jazz-inflected madness pervades the senses of the listener. That Cynic had more than a few sonic similarities to Death's finest hours (recall "Evil" Chuck's last 4 proper releases) and that Canvas Solaris was once a "regular" Death Metal band who worshipped at the altar of Schuldiner is borne out in more than a few places on the band's second full length release, Penumbra Diffuse. Excellent use of acoustic passages replete with hand drums even conjures the undead specter of Nile. Think what Neurosis might sound like if they were trippy instead of being so damned heavy and you begin to approach the kind of excellence on display here. Occasional post-Hardcore instrumental trappings not unlike Explosions in the Sky or later era Isis are put forth on some of these epic soundscapes with flat-out technical virtuosity unfurled soon thereafter and in between, and synthesizers/keyboards are used throughout but do not detract from the overall vibe. Dedicating this album to the late Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, this 3-piece (!) truly are masters of their craft. This is inspired music that one can relax to as much as one can be challenged by it. Bravo!
