French Hardcore. Sounds curious if not interesting doesn't it? Well, when it is executed as well as l'Esprit du Clan's latest offering, Chapitre 2: Reverence, it is more interesting than curious. The sonic blueprint of such European proponents of Hardcore like Cataract, Barcode, Throwdown, and Born From Pain is recalled, though perhaps with more anger and aggression. This thing just sounds violent, man! The band apparently toured Europe with Merauder in 2000 and perhaps stole the show every night, as much as I enjoyed Merauder's brief recorded output. "Le Venin" displays a nice clean guitar intro that is utterly destroyed by a very Sepultura-esque fade-in replete with guttural bellow. Of note is the "hidden" acoustic track ("Babylone" again, perhaps?) comprising the final ~5 minutes of the album that really showcases another side of the band. Musically speaking, anyway.
This album is a really solid, well executed slab of Metallic Hardcore that would no doubt convert fans worldwide but for two things. 1.) This band's records are invariably difficult to find. 2.) The band doesn't seem to tour outside of Europe. Fix these two things and get on with converting the savages out there, folks. Of note is the use of dual vocalists, though one is not necessarily that different from the other -- y'know, like with 3 Inches of Blood. It doesn't even matter that these lyrics are roared in French. The music is fantastic for what it is. Reminiscent of Sepultura at their best, but with more Hardcore than Thrash, and none of that world music vibe, l'Esprit du Clan is killer. Track down "the spirit of the clan" if you can. [Late 2006 saw the re-release of this album with 2 bonus tracks and 2 bonus videos via Gods Child Records (from Hong Kong, of all places).]
