REVIEW: Monkey3 - Monkey3 Buzzville Records, 2004
8/10
Monkey3 - Monkey3 - cover art This is the self-titled debut album of a Swizz band called Monkey3 of whom I have never heard before but it turned out to be a pleasant experience getting myself acquainted with the band's music. Like any other good stoner / doom band they have of course been influenced by the mighty Black Sabbath (who you should not fail to see this summer if you have the chance!) but this is one of the more unique releases I've heard from the genre in a long time. Monkey3 do not only hold Sabbath as their house gods but also pioneering rock bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin which gives rise to many unusual and highly interesting twists and turns in the music. Music is all there is I might need to mention as this album is entirely instrumental which is by itself a brave move by a stoner rock band. This genre often means repetetive patterns meant to cause somewhat of a suggestive effect and there is plenty of that recipe on the Monkey3 album also but it doesn't stop there.

The suggestive effect that arises from repetetive riffs doesn't leave but the band alters the riffs slightly step by step which makes every song sound as coherent as it is dynamic and vivid, something of extreme importance when creating good instrumental music. The band doesn't go to extremes, nor experiment beyond what's appropriate for their music, which gives the album a nice, soft and soothing atmosphere despite sometimes displaying a rather harsh, heavy and aggressive edge. Their aim is not to compose complex nor fast-paced music but rather to built up different moods and they are highly successful with their task. Monkey3 is definitely one of the most interesting young bands in the stoner rock genre and their debut album marks the beginning of a very promising career. A fine instrumental rock disc that takes the listener on a journey through space and time. The album ends with a cover of the Melvins song "Lividity".
