REVIEW: Napalm Death - Smear Campaign Century Media, 2006
8.5/10
Napalm Death - Smear Campaign - cover art More than 20 years have passed since the band's inception and Napalm Death sounds as important as -- and angrier than -- ever. Maybe it's because Barney doesn't get enough red meat. Nah, I'm just kiddin'. As good as The Code is Red... Long Live the Code may have been, these Brummies have just upped the ante in a major way. Not sounding so contemptuous since Enemy of the Music Business (and enemy of Earache Records), Napalm Death's sophomore release for Century Media should have all fans of extreme music enthralled. Though down to a 4-piece for a few years now, the band is as ferocious as a pack of rabid badgers.

Once again brutal for brutality's sake, high-pitched shrieked vocals are repeatedly and menacingly paired with the traditional guttural bellowing that Barney's fans have come to love. Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering) adds "enchanting female vocals" according to the press release, but this writer thinks they sound way out of place. An interesting atmospheric twist can be found now and again, as well as some old school crossover influences, no doubt courtesy of Shane Embury. These sounds tread the same waters that obviously inspired Superjoint Ritual but they're nothing new to the legions of Napalm Death fans. The titular track holds a few surprises, too, particularly with the vocals (think Alchemist).

As good as this album is, I can't shake the feeling that "When All is Said and Done" apes Pro-Pain's "Shine" (from 1996's Contents Under Pressure) though soaked in the sound and style of early Morbid Angel. But maybe it's just me. Either way, all aspects of Napalm Death are represented well on the band's latest and indeed greatest but you'll find yourself wondering where the 45 minutes went. The godfathers of Grind will no doubt be hitting a town near you soon so do yourself a favor and bear witness to this seminal outfit. You will be chuffed.
