REVIEW: Vemoth - Köttkroksvals Temple Of Darkness Records, 2006
7/10
Vemoth - Köttkroksvals - cover art Imagine a band inspired in the spirit of Dissection, brought further through melodies à la Mörk Gryning and Naglfar and helped by some blastbeats in the vein of Dark Funeral. Stir these ingredients in the cauldron and you´ll got Swedish act Vemoth in your dish ready to be listened. This band picks influences from here and there to conform a powerful musical beast rather correct than amazing or really shocking. When “Köttkroksvals” is played, the first thing we notice is the intense “Mörka Drömmar”, that makes expectations rise with those crushing riffs and grinding beats; it´s the classic fast starter built off catchy melodies to grasp the attention of the listener. The rest of the album strays away from that and several convincing mid tempos provide variety to the whole and fill the album, always under the influence of the well-known melodic focus traditionally performed by Swedish black metal acts. Voice is aggressive and ultra-raspy with no remorse although it may result a bit monotonous in the end. The tempo is varied and the rhythm section has been quite nurtured by the production. Every instrument is perfectly noticeable and unfortunately that´s something we miss in many releases nowadays, where the snaredrum is the tyrant of the final mix. With this their debut album Vemoth make an impact on the scene and hopefully the next releases will give shape to a stronger personal touch since the listener easily could miss something really unique here. All in all we´re before a quite enjoyable piece of Swedish black/death metal able to please the ears of people fond of the bands mentioned in the first lines of this review.
